29/52 Handful of blueberries, 6” x 6”, oil on canvas board I’m painting on location at the moment, so my plan is to work from photos, or plein air paint for a while. This painting is from a photo by @alaiganuza and @dennispfeil.art’s food paint challenge. I will be dipping into some of their older ones and from other IG artists that are sharing their photo reference offerings!
There is so much to learn from doing this. I painted my own in my style, then I followed the hashta
The school year draws to a close for us at the end of this week. The plan is to chill, take some walks and read some books (the kids have streams lined up too). So looking forward to a little r&r. Photo reference from Sarah Sedwick and painted during one of our group zoom sessions. #stilllifeoilpainting #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #stilleben #persimmon #paintingoftheday #sundaypainting #womenartistsofinstagram #instaartwork #instaart #renoart #cheltenhamartist
#22 Easter Bunny A fun little painting for Easter. I painted this cutie from a photo from the Tolle-Perry Easter painting challenge. It is definitely a little different because of the imagery and because I used blending. I have been building a little collection of paintings that can be used for holiday decorating and this will now be joining the eggs on the Easter display. Have a great rest of your weekend ! #easterbunny #oilpainting #painting #art #womenartistsofinstagram #m
21/52 A bowl of pomegranates with the King on the top. All hand grown and picked by the hand of Odysseus. The composition was hard in this painting. The big pomegranate needed to stand out as the main subject, but I didn't want to completely loose the smaller ones. I compromised by simplifying the color range in the King and going to town with all the subtle golden colors in the smaller ones. #stilllife #pomegranates #oilpainting #dailypaintworks #dailypaintings #paintingchal
18/52 I like to have an interesting angle in a painting and sometimes bringing things really close can add mystery. As long as composition rules are followed it works, so why not have a bit of fun with it, right? I added my sloppy underpainting, so that you can see a little of my process. The usual 3 primaries were used to mix up my colours. Thanks @sedwickstudio for reference photos (for me to butcher!). #oilpainting #foodpainting #kitchendecor #52in52weeks #art #stilllife #
17/52 I painted this in time for Valentine’s, but lost it (who actually loses a wet oil painting?).
Anyways, better late than never eh? This was the first time I have painted a ribbon and I found it a challenge to indicate the twists and turns. I enjoyed working out that puzzle and will put that on my list to try again. #oilpainting #stilllife #oilonpanel #kunst #stilleben #cheltenhamartist #renoartist #love #valentine
16/52 One more pair I couldn’t resist going back to the shoes and painting one more. I worked on an 8 x 8” canvas panel and REALLY loved every minute of painting these. Some days the painting just paints itself and I’m just along to watch the show. #oilpainting #converse #dailypainting #stilllife #shoepainting #womenartistsofinstagram #paintingforfun #renoartist #cheltenhamartist #arte
15/52 Snowdrops Winter is dragging on. Summer is my favorite season these days but this year, these snowy months are downright tiresome. I’m longing for some sun on my skin. I really tuned in with this painting and once again I found painting snow really enjoyable. The colors mixed well on the palette and I think I was able to get the subtle touches on the petals. Yep, I think I'm proud of this one. #snowdrops #oilpainting #oilincanvas #paintingchallenge #art #snowscape #mini
14/42 6” x 6”, Oil Painting on Canvas Board
Conversely, these are not like my previous shoe paintings. Sorry, couldn't resist. My favorite pair of Converse and they play nicely against the Jimmy Choo painting of shoes the same color, but of a very different style. #52in52weeks #converse #conversepainting #stilllife #dailypainting #arte #weeklyart #shoepainting #oilpainting
12/52 Ruby Slippers I’m quite enjoying this shoe challenge. With Valentine’s Day so close, I had to paint some red heels. When I try on a pair of heels from the closet, I feel like a kid playing dress up, or like I am indulging in a secret pleasure. There isn’t anywhere to fun to go and wear them during a pandemic, but I might wear them around the house this week to feel sexy Haha Even at my age, I definitely have days where I want to feel more Wicked Witch than Dorothy. #wom
11/52 Jimmy Who? This time I was challenged by my mentor Sarah, @sedwickstudio to paint shoes. I don’t wear fancy shoes (well maybe boots), but my Mother always did. So with her in mind, I have a pair of dressy heels. I like the negative shapes formed in this one, it made painting the straps an enjoyable puzzle. #shoepainting #oilpainting #jimmychoo #paintingoftheday #womenartistsofinstagram #art
10/52 Pomegranate, Peppers and Cranberries. I painted this from a composition set up by my mentor Sarah @sedwickstudio. I fell in love with painting her cranberries, as the brushstrokes are fun to twist and form a shape with it’s own tiny shadow. She uses a very distinctive viewpoint and style and I am honored that she is making time to walk me through her steps. #sarahsedwick #oilpainting #stilllife #52in52weeks #paintingchallenge #art #painting #painter
9/52 Coffee or Tea? I was challenged to paint a cup of coffee by my mentor @sedwickstudio this month.
I put it off a while, because I don’t drink coffee very often. I figured that this was a bit of a cheat, but Sarah is now also off coffee and painted herself a Chai tea. Go figure! Next year we will have to make it a tea challenge. I loved the olive green and the coffee beans were a lot of fun to paint. I might try painting some small berries or something similar next time.
I painted with the news on in the background today. A new president and a new term. I hope for unity and peace over the next 4 years (and beyond!). #52in52weeks #oilpainting #weeklypainting #artchallenge
7/52 Snow Day Quail I haven’t painted a bird in a while, so here is one of my favorite birds of Reno. I am finding that I enjoy painting snow, which is a bit odd considering it is just white. #52in52weeks #quailart #sierrasnow #oilpainting #birdart
I am repeating the challenge of painting 52 paintings in 52 weeks. If we didn't have a pandemic around us, I would have a whole different plan for the year. Sigh. Ah well, this is a great way to keep the skills up and hopefully improve. #1 Thoughts of a Citrus Dessert - oil paints on Arches Oil Paper The underpainting was done previously, so this is my starting point. A New Year starts and I’m looking forward to rebooting the painting challenge for 2021 - 52 paintings in 52 weeks. Here is a behind the scenes look at my still life set up. My light has 3 main light settings and I usually use the blue daylight setting. I have a simple process - First stage is the set up, then I premix my palette. Before painting directly, I make an underpainting, to work out the placement and composition details. The painting is done alla Prima - all in one g
52/52 DONE!!! I was determined to finish by today, so that now I can finish the holiday baking (plus today is my birthday!). I have to say I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Quarantine 2020 was the perfect storm for an art challenge. I struggled a bit on some days but I still did it and my work improved as a result. I will do a year long challenge again in 2021, but change it up a bit. Who is doing an art challenge for 2021 and what is your challenge? Put your
51/52 Sherry and Mince Pie This is what Santa has when he comes to our house (and pretty much all English houses haha). He gets a milk and cookies chaser, because that’s what Americans give Santa. Not a bad gig really. The mince pies we made this week were in honour of my sister, who gave us a different recipe to try. I even cut out stars to match hers What do you put out for Santa? #christmaspainting #52in52weeks #paintanyway #dailypainters #oilpainting #stilllife #paintfrom
50/52 It’s a Winter wonderland outside today. I teased my kids this morning and told them it’s a snow day and they can stay home ALL day.
I guess they got me back with saying that they don’t need to clear the drive for the rest of the year, because we won’t be going anywhere. 2020 - it’s the little things... #oiloncanvaspanel #oilpainting #allaprima #52in52weeks #weeklypainting #quarantinelife #quarantineart #quarantineartclub #thepractice #artchallenge2020 #fmj #womenartist
